Dysplastic Nevi or “Ugly Ducklings” πŸ£πŸ”

We’ve talked about the Ugly Duckling Method Β of checking your moles – that if one mole is different from the rest of your moles, it’s worth having the mole checked by your doctor. Β However it’s important to remember that abnormal moles, which may even meet with ABCDE criteria, do not always equal Melanoma.

Atypical moles may resemble a melanoma in appearance; however, they do not have other features of melanoma such as persistent and ongoing change.

Atypical Moles or Dysplastic Nevi, although not cancerous, are even more important to keep an eye on:

People who have them are at increased risk of developing melanoma in a mole or elsewhere on the body. The higher the number of these moles someone has, the higher the risk.
